The MVA – Creative Studio Portfolio

mva_front

We came across the MVA as we told you about the “New Skateboard Graphics by J. Namdev Hardisty” after the pretty much liked all the work. We saw from Namdev we asked him to tell us something about the MVA, how all came into existence, on which projects they are working and what the future has to offer. So far congratulations and all the best for your little baby.

What is The MVA?

I’ve been using the name The MVA to describe work I make since graduating from Minneapolis College of Art & Design in 2003. Originally it stood for the Midwest Visual Agency but the idea was to have the name work more like a graffiti crew where it could mean lots of things: Midwest Visual Agency, Making Victims Always, Modern Volunteer Army, etc.

In 2005, The MVA became the creative partnership of myself and my wife Kimberlee Whaley. In between working day jobs, we’d take on freelance projects and design our own stuff—t-shirts, screenprints, etc.

Since 2008, our work as The MVA has really begun to take shape. We produced two books last year that have just been released by Mark Batty Publisher. “New Skateboard Graphics” came out in March and “DIY Album Art: Paper Bags and Office Supplies” will drop any day now. With these projects, we’ve been able to expand past graphic design and develop projects from start to finish. We’ve been putting heavy work into other self-published projects: Kim has edited and designed the first issue of her magazine “Thirty” and I run the micro-record label Hardisty-Disk, plus we’re making art and contributing to exhibitions. We continue to take on cool freelance work: ads for Corleone Records; t-shirts for Analog Clothing and we completed our first issue of the MCAD Magazine for Minneapolis College of Art & Design.

Our focus now in 2009 is  to make The MVA our full-time job and bring in more friends and family. We’re expecting our first baby in September and neither of us wants to go work for anybody else. We’re going to continue to work in a mix self-published projects; content development for publishers and good freelance work and we just started our first open-ended consulting gig helping a writer develop his personal brand and manage creativity.

Thank you Namdev for your time and all the imagery. Visit the website at  the-mva.com
